July 17-18, 2024
Inching my way north next stop was Whitetail Ridge, a COE Campground on the shores of West Point Lake. It was a 2 1/2 hour drive from Chehaw but Check-In time was 4PM. I left Chehaw at 12:30, arrived at Whitetail around 3PM. Just as I arrived the skies opened for a torrential downpour. I knew I had a back in site (my first) and was stressing all day about it.
I pulled to the site (#10) in the downpour and waited nearly 30 minutes for the rain to subside a bit. Not only was this a back in but a “blind” back in – one prefers the angle of the back in to be such that drivers side of the trailer is always in view – with a blind back in the drivers side leaves your view.
Well, after five or so attempts I got it. Fortunately, there were no spectators. I think I did fairly well.
All set up and a first impression from the site.
It really is a beautiful campground and site. On one side there is no neighboring site, on the other the first two or three sites are empty.
A few pictures from the next morning’s walk. These are sites in neighboring loops. There were many empty sites. Also, several tent campers. Although the real feel temperature here is 10-15 degrees cooler than Florida it is still mid July in Georgia – I can’t imagine being a tent camper here.
All in all it was a great relaxing day. I went to a LaGrange brewery in the evening for a few beers and a smash burger. Truth is, a few years ago I had a work assignment in Columbus, GA (about 30 miles south). During trips to Columbus I enjoyed the Wild Leap Brewing Company Chance IPA. On one of my trips I had visited this brewery.
And so my first brewery of the journey gets a sticker on the RV fridge.
Tomorrow I move on to Tennessee.
